Single-Disc Microelectrodes

Thomas RECORDING electrochemical single-disc microelectrodes were originally designed for SECM (Scanning ElectroChemical Microscopy), but they are also suitable as working electrodes for other electrochemical applications like voltammetry or amperometry.

The electrodes are based on unique single metal core fibers of platinum or platinum/tungsten alloy, insulated with quartz glass.

A special manufacturing process guarantees a highly centered metal core within the glass insulation and a high reproducibility of the RG ratio.

Product Description

Key Features

  • Quartz glass insulted single-metal disc electrode fiber

  • Metal is platinum or platinum / tungsten-alloy (95%/5%)

  • Different RG values available

  • The metal core is always centred within the polished glass cross section

  • Insulation material is quartz glass in contrast to borosilicate glass which is often used. Quartz glass has a lower dielectric constant (app. 3,5…3,8) a higher volume resistivity and a much lower loss factor (quartz glass app. 0.0038, borosilicate glass app. 0.584). As known from patch pipettes, glasses with the lowest loss factor exhibit the lowest electrical noise in the recorded signals. It is a well known fact that quartz glass improves the signal to noise ratio of probes dramatically in contrast to other insulation materials (e.g. borosilicate glass).

  • Customization of electrodes is possible.

Nanodes

Thomas Nanodes are Single-Disc Electrodes with disc diameters in the nanometer range. Electrodes of nanometer sizes are used to study the nanoscale electrochemical properties and processes, which are of fundamental and applied significance in a variety of areas including energy and environmental science, scanning probe microscopies, nanofabrication as well as electrochemistry itself. Thomas RECORDING provides Nanodes with disc diameters of app. 500 nm. These electrodes are customized to our user´s needs. So please do not hesitate to aks for your individual electrode design!

Single-Microdisc Electrodes (MDE)

Thomas single-MicroDisc Electrodes (MDE) differ from our Single-Disc Microelectrodes (SDM) in that they have a thicker electrode shaft (in the millimeter range) and therefore a different RG ratio than our SDM. This makes them suitable for other applications within electrochemistry. These MDEs can also be customized to customer specifications.
