Concentric Bipolar Electrodes

As a leading manufacturer of premium neurophysiological research tools, we design and produce state-of-the-art concentric bipolar microelectrodes tailored for critical extracellular recording and localized microstimulation.

Whether your laboratory focuses on acute in vitro brain slice recordings, chronic in vivo deep-brain behavior studies, or stereotaxic mapping, our concentric microelectrodes provide the mechanical rigidity and electrical reliability required for high-impact data acquisition.

We understand that no two research setups are identical. Beyond our standard portfolio, we offer comprehensive customization options, including flexible shaft lengths, smooth tip geometry, tailored impedance ranges, and seamless connector integrations.

Product Description

Engineered for uncompromised Signal Integrity

In the demanding field of electrophysiology, spatial resolution and artifact rejection are paramount. Our concentric electrodes feature a coaxial design—precisely centering a micro-diameter inner core within an insulated outer stainless steel shaft. This geometric configuration confines the electrical field to an ultra-localized volume of tissue, delivering distinct advantages for your research:

  • Superior Spatial Resolution: Capture sharp, highly localized Field Potentials (LFPs) and Multi-Unit Activity (MUA) without volume conduction from distant brain structures.

  • Excellent Common-Mode Rejection: Maximize your signal-to-noise ratio. The shielding effect of the outer contact effectively reduces external electrical noise and environmental artifacts.

  • Minimized Stimulation Artifacts: Perfect for evoked-potential studies and synaptic plasticity research (LTP/LTD), allowing clear recording of immediate neuronal responses post-stimulation.

The evolution of concentric bipolar microarchitecture has significantly shifted toward maximizing spatial selectivity while maintaining optimal electrochemical performance. While standard industry models utilize tip exposure lengths ranging between 200 µm and 400 µm, advanced engineering by Thomas RECORDING allows for a drastic reduction of these dimensions. By implementing unique manufacturing techniques, Thomas RECORDING manufactures concentric microelectrodes with exposed metal tip lengths as short as 64 µm. This structural refinement has major implications for high-density neural mapping, microstimulation, and low-noise recording paradigms. Critically, reducing a metal microelectrode's physical surface area to a micrometer scale geometrically increases its electrical impedance (Z). To overcome this physical bottleneck, Thomas RECORDING offers advanced optional electrochemical tip coatings, such as low-impedance Platinum-Tungsten co-deposition with Iridium Oxide. Lowered impedance within this range allows the microelectrode to easily switch between recording high-fidelity local field potentials (LFPs) and delivering charge-balanced microstimulation pulses without causing electrode polarization or tissue hydrolysis.

This concentric bipolar electrode is available for acute or chronical applications!
